ASIAN RHINOPLASTY

Nose is one of the most individualized features of our face. There are distinct nasal features among various asian groups. In general, most asian patients desire a higher nasal bridge, increased nasal length and more defined tip.

The most optimal result can be achieved through a structural rhinoplasty approach using cartilage grafts. While silicone and gore-tex implants offer an affordable alternative and a simple surgical approach, these implants are prone to complications and simply can not achieve the aesthetic result comparable to structural rhinoplasty using natural grafts. Rhinoplasty is often known as a “4D” operation, the result continues to change over the course of time. This is especially true in asian rhinoplasty where patients’ soft tissue is more abundant and the refined details often take years to reveal. Therefore, it is important to find a surgeon who has decades of experience that you can count on.

HOW IS ASIAN RHINOPLASTY PERFORMED?

Rhinoplasty usually takes about three to five hours to complete and is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia.

Dr. Sung uses an open approach to refine and enhance the nasal profile and tip.

This technique involves creating an incision across the columella, the central column of tissue that separates the nostrils.  The open rhinoplasty is Dr. Sung’s preferred approach because it provides an unparalleled view of all the anatomical features, and the scars are nearly imperceivable.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY ASIAN RHINOPLASTY RECOVERY?

Immediately after surgery, the nose and eyes are usually bruised and swollen. Splints will remain inside and outside the nose for a few days. Most patients feel like themselves within a few days and can return to their regular activities one week after the procedure. During recovery, patients should refrain from strenuous exercise, wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and avoid any activity that puts pressure on the nose.

“I’m glad that I found Dr.Sung. Wonderful experience and Dr. Sung is a wonderful surgeon, and the staff is always helpful and kind. They ensured I had a smooth prep, surgery, and follow-up. I would highly recommend to anyone.“

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT AFTER ASIAN RHINOPLASTY?

Although there may be swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes after surgery, these side effects will subside on their own in a few weeks. For final results, it often takes months to years for patients to see. The scars are well-concealed and usually fade over time until they are virtually undetectable. It may take up to a year for all the swelling to subside, especially the nasal tip. For those patients with thick skin, it takes up to two years and reveals the fine features resulting from the rhinoplasty. Dr. Sung will follow-up with you closely throughout this period. Patients may choose to undergo a revision rhinoplasty later if they desire any more nasal improvement.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF ASIAN RHINOPLASTY?

Complications associated with rhinoplasty are uncommon, especially when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. However, the risks of any surgery include the following:

  • Changes in sensation
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Abnormal reaction to anesthesia
  • asymmetry
  • Localized pain
