LOWER BLEPHAROPLASTY

For many patients, the first sign of facial aging is the "eyebags". The reason for the appearance of eye bags is both due to genetics and environmental. The skin around the eyes is delicate, and the anatomical support is fragile. Furthermore, lifestyle choices such as the use of alcohol, tobacco, prolonged screen time, and lack of life-work balance can contribute to eyelid tissue weakness that results in a tired appearance. Dr. Jimmy C. Sung, a renowned expert in lower blepharoplasty, performs this procedure with a unique hybrid approach and meticulous precision. His expertise, honed over years of practice, corrects the appearance of the eyelids and produces stunning enhancement while maintaining patients' natural eyelid shape, instilling confidence in his patients about the natural and youthful results they can expect.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR A LOWER BLEPHAROPLASTY?

The ideal candidates for lower blepharoplasty have realistic expectations of the procedure, are generally in good mental and physical health, do not smoke, and do not have any severe eye conditions. Both men and women may consider lower blepharoplasty if they can relate to any of the following concerns:

  • Deep grooves or bags under the eyes
  • Dark circles around the eyes
  • Deep grooves or bags under the eyes
  • Puffiness around the eyes

HOW IS A BLEPHAROPLASTY PERFORMED?

Lower blepharoplasty usually takes about 45 minutes to two hours to complete, depending on the complexity and any adjunctive procedures that may be performed. These adjunctive procedures could include a mid-face lift, fat grafting or skin resurfacing to address additional aging concerns. The lower blepharoplasty procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia. In some cases, nervous patients can opt for sedative anesthesia to ease their anxieties about undergoing surgery. Dr. Sung, known for his individualized approach, offers different blepharoplasty techniques and hybrid methods to meet each patient's unique goals and needs.

Transconjunctival Lower Blepharoplasty:
The transconjunctival technique involves creating an incision inside the lower eyelid through which fat is repositioned. No excess skin is removed, and there is no visible scarring. This approach is appropriate for patients with moderate skin laxity who want to reduce the appearance of under-eye bags and puffiness in the lower eyelids.

Subciliary Lower Blepharoplasty: An incision is created just below the lash line to target cosmetic concerns in the lower eyelid. Fat is then repositioned to produce a more youthful eye contour. Muscles and tissue are tightened, and excess skin is removed.  This approach can also be combined with a minimally invasive mid-face lift to rejuvenate the face in a very elegant way.

Hybrid Lower Blepharoplasty: The hybrid approach, a unique feature of Dr. Sung's practice, combines traditional surgical techniques with energy-based devices such as radio-frequency, laser, and plasma. This combination not only corrects the appearance of the eyelids but also enhances the skin quality of the lower eyelids. The use of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and nano-fat further aids in the regenerative process, resulting in a more youthful and natural look.

“I’m glad that I found Dr. Sung. Wonderful experience and Dr. Sung is a wonderful surgeon, and the staff is always helpful and kind. They ensured I had a smooth prep, surgery, and follow-up. I would highly recommend to anyone.“

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY BLEPHAROPLASTY RECOVERY?

After blepharoplasty, patients may be advised to apply lubricating drops or ointment and use cold compresses to aid in healing. Most patients return to work in a few days to a week but should avoid exercise and strenuous activities for at least two weeks. Stitches are usually removed after five to seven days. Most swelling and other side effects typically subside within two weeks, at which point patients can resume wearing contact lenses and makeup. It is recommended to wear dark sunglasses when outside or in bright light for two weeks to protect the eyes.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT AFTER MY BLEPHAROPLASTY?

Although there may be swelling and bruising around the eyes after surgery, these side effects will subside on their own, and the eyelids will improve in appearance for up to a year. The scars from blepharoplasty are well-concealed and usually fade with time until they are virtually undetectable. Although the eyelids are still subject to aging, blepharoplasty produces beautifully natural and long-lasting results.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF A BLEPHAROPLASTY?

Complications associated with blepharoplasty are uncommon, especially when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. However, the risks of any surgery can include the following:

  • Asymmetry
  • Visual changes
  • Changes in sensation
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Injury to nerves at or near the surgical site
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Need for revision
