The nose plays an essential role in creating a balanced and pleasing facial aesthetic because it is a focal point of the face. Having a poorly shaped or overly large nose can distract from a patient’s other features, which may affect their self-esteem and quality of life. Rhinoplasty is one of the most sought-after facial enhancement procedures, and it may be performed to correct a congenital condition, repair an injury, improve breathing, or enhance a patient’s appearance. At his elegant and relaxing surgical facility, Dr. Jimmy C. Sung performs rhinoplasty and can reshape, reduce, or augment your nose, restoring harmony and balance to your facial features.

The ideal candidates for rhinoplasty should be at least 18 years of age, have realistic expectations of the procedure, are in generally good health, and do not smoke. Both men and women may consider rhinoplasty if they can relate to any of the following concerns:
Rhinoplasty usually takes about three to five hours to complete and is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia. There are two techniques for performing a rhinoplasty: open and closed. Dr. Sung will choose the appropriate technique for each patient depending on the extent of correction necessary to achieve their goals.
This technique involves creating an incision across the columella, the central column of tissue that separates the nostrils. The open rhinoplasty is Dr. Sung’s preferred approach because it provides an unparalleled view of all the anatomical features, and the scars are nearly imperceivable.
This technique involves placing all incisions within the nose, eliminating the risk of external scarring. Dr. Sung will determine whether you are a candidate for closed rhinoplasty during your initial consultation.
Immediately after surgery, the nose and eyes are usually bruised and swollen. Splints will remain inside and outside the nose for a few days. Most patients feel like themselves within a few days and can return to their regular activities one week after the procedure. During recovery, patients should refrain from strenuous exercise, wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and avoid any activity that puts pressure on the nose.
Although there may be swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes after surgery, these side effects will subside on their own in a few weeks. For final results, it often takes months to years for patients to see. The scars are well-concealed and usually fade over time until they are virtually undetectable. It may take up to a year for all the swelling to subside, especially the nasal tip. For those patients with thick skin, it takes up to two years and reveals the fine features resulting from the rhinoplasty. Patients may choose to undergo a revision rhinoplasty later if they desire any more nasal improvement.
Complications associated with rhinoplasty are uncommon, especially when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. However, the risks of any surgery include the following:
