Many believe that plump, sensuous breasts are the quintessential symbol of femininity. However, pregnancy, significant weight loss, and the natural aging process can contribute to an unsatisfactory breast appearance, and some women are unhappy with their naturally small or asymmetrical breasts. Dr. Sung provides breast augmentation using implants or fat grafting to create customized breast enhancement tailored to his patients’ aesthetic desires.

AM I A CANDIDATE FOR A BREAST AUGMENTATION

The ideal candidates for breast augmentation have realistic expectations of the procedure, are in generally good health, and do not smoke. Individuals may consider breast augmentation if they can relate to any of the following concerns:

  • Naturally small breasts
  • Breast volume loss
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Gender affirmation

WHAT ARE MY BREAST AUGMENTATION OPTIONS?

Patients who opt for breast augmentation using implants can choose from the following options:

Implant Type

  • Silicone implants are composed of a silicone shell filled with silicone gel. They accurately mimic the look and feel of natural breast tissue and come in a variety of shapes and sizes
  • Saline implants are composed of a silicone shell filled with a sterile saline solution. These implants are ideal for patients who desire a prominent breast profile or smaller incisions.

Implant Location

  • Subglandular implants are placed beneath breast tissue but above the pectoral muscle. Subglandular placement may be recommended for women who have some degree of ptosis or are engaged in vigorous upper body activities such as swimming.
  • Submuscular implants are placed below the pectoral muscle. Advantages of submuscular placement include a reduced risk of capsular contracture (hardening of scar tissue around the implants), a lower risk of visible rippling, and more support that may help prevent sagging and provide longer-lasting results.

Implant Method

  • Transaxillary: incision is in the armpit
  • Endoscopic: a minimally invasive approach with the use of an endoscope and HD monitor
  • Inframammary: incision is along the natural crease underneath the breast
  • Periareolar: incision is around the areolas

How is a Breast Augmentation Performed?

Breast augmentation is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia, but some patients may qualify for intravenous sedation and local anesthesia. Depending on a patient’s aesthetic desires and body type, Dr. Sung performs breast augmentation using either implants or fat grafting.

Breast Augmentation Using Implants

This procedure usually takes one to two hours to complete. Incisions are created in inconspicuous locations to minimize scar visibility. Implants can be placed under the breast tissue or both the breast tissue and pectoral muscle.

Breast Augmentation Fat Grafting

This procedure usually takes four to five hours to complete. Liposuction is performed using a thin cannula to harvest excess fat from problem areas of the body, such as the abdomen, hips, or thighs. The fat cells are minimally manipulated and then injected into the breasts through tiny incisions methodically. Breast augmentation using fat grafting is most appropriate for women who wish for subtle and natural enhancement.

“ I went for a consultation for the first time and Dr. Sung made me feel immediately at ease with his warm and cheerful personality. While I didn’t know much about any treatments, Dr. Sung didn’t oversell and provided customized advice. He read my mind and within a few mins, I was given a very natural improvement that I’ve always wanted. He also spent a long time chatting with me afterward and didn’t shy away from giving compliments. I left feeling I rediscovered my outer and inner beauty. “

Additional FAQ About Breast Augmentation Procedures?

What can I expect during my breast augmentation recovery?

For a few days after surgery, patients can expect to feel tired and sore. A surgical bra is typically worn over the bandages to minimize swelling and support the breasts, and, if applicable, compression garments are worn over the areas that received liposuction. Most patients can return to work after one week, but those who opt for breast augmentation using fat grafting may feel comfortable enough to resume working sooner. Patients should avoid strenuous activities for at least four weeks. Stitches are removed seven to 10 days after the procedure, and any postoperative discomfort should subside during the first few weeks of recovery. Patients will start massaging exercise at home for the next few months. A very natural result can be expected after about 6 months.

What results can I expect after my breast augmentation procedure?

The effects of breast augmentation, whether with implants or fat grafting, are immediately noticeable. The final results will be more natural once the swelling alleviates, which takes about one month. Any scars that develop at the incision sites can be easily hidden by clothing and tend to fade over time until they are practically imperceivable. Breast augmentation results are considered to be permanent, but pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and aging can affect the appearance of the breasts.

What are some of the risks of breast augmentation?

Complications associated with breast augmentation are uncommon, especially when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. Although rare, some of the complications related to breast augmentation using implants include the following:

  • Changes in sensation
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Scars
  • Abnormal reaction to anesthesia
  • Localized pain
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Capsular contracture
  • Implant deflation

Risks associated with breast augmentation using fat grafting include those related to liposuction, as well as the following:

  • Changes in sensation
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Scars
  • Abnormal reaction to anesthesia
  • Localized pain
  • Loss of fat
  • Calcification and oil cysts
  • Donor area defects

Because of the loss of volume that occurs when fat is reabsorbed by the body, touch-up fat grafting is often necessary. Touch up injections can be performed using local anesthesia.
