Many patients are concerned about the appearance of their lower eyelids. The contour or laxity of the tissue around the lower eyelid region often gives the patient a tired and aged appearance. Lower Blepharoplasty is a good option for those concerned about the appearance of their lower eyelids.
Radiant, magnetic eyes can make you appear vivacious and approachable. Some would even say the eyes are the most intriguing facial feature because they can communicate a range of nonverbal cues and emotions. Over time, however, the eyes tend to be the first part of the face to exhibit noticeable signs of aging because the skin around the eyes is so thin and delicate. Eyelids that sag over the natural crease can affect peripheral vision, making daily activities more difficult or even hazardous. Several factors, such as aging and various lifestyle choices, can contribute to eyelid tissue weakness that results in a tired appearance. Dr. Jimmy C. Sung performs blepharoplasty with meticulous precision to correct drooping eyelids and produce stunning enhancement while maintaining his patients’ natural eyelid shape.

Lower Blepharoplasty usually takes about 45 minutes to two hours to complete. This procedure is typically performed as an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. In some cases, nervous patients can opt for general anesthesia to ease their anxieties about undergoing surgery. Dr. Sung offers different blepharoplasty techniques to meet each patient’s unique goals and needs:
Transconjunctival Lower Blepharoplasty (scarless eyebag removal) : The transconjunctival technique involves creating an incision inside the lower eyelid through which fat is repositioned. No excess skin is removed, and there is no visible scarring. This approach is appropriate for patients who want to reduce the appearance of under-eye bags and puffiness in the lower eyelids.
Transconjunctival Lower Blepharoplasty: An incision is created just below the lash line to target cosmetic concerns in the lower eyelid. Fat is then repositioned to produce a more youthful eye contour. Muscles and tissue are tightened, and excess skin is removed. This approach can also be combined with a minimally invasive mid-face lift to rejuvenate the face in a very elegant way.
After lower blepharoplasty, patients may be advised to apply lubricating drops or ointment and use cold compresses to aid in healing. Most patients return to work in a few days to a week but should avoid exercise and strenuous activities for at least two weeks. Stitches are usually removed after five to seven days. Most swelling and other side effects typically subside within two weeks, at which point patients can resume wearing contact lenses and makeup. It is recommended to wear dark sunglasses when outside or in bright light for two weeks to protect the eyes.
Although there may be swelling and bruising around the eyes after surgery, these side effects will subside on their own, and the eyelids will improve in appearance for up to a year. The scars from blepharoplasty are well-concealed and usually fade with time until they are virtually undetectable. Although the eyelids are still subject to aging, blepharoplasty produces beautifully natural and long-lasting results.
Complications associated with blepharoplasty are uncommon, especially when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. However, the risks of any surgery can include the following:
